The Thai massage room: low mattresses dressed in lime green with woven Thai runners, along a curtained wall.

What it does

The therapist works slowly into the deeper layers of muscle, using forearms and elbows as much as hands. The pace is deliberately slow: deep work done fast is just painful work, and it does not hold.

It is not a whole-body treatment in the way a Thai or oil massage is. You name the area — usually shoulders, lower back or calves — and most of the hour goes there.

Expect to feel it the next day, the way you would after training. That is normal; sharp pain during the treatment is not.

Who it suits

  • A specific knot or ache that a normal massage has not shifted
  • Runners, divers, climbers and anyone training on the island
  • Desk and driving stiffness that has settled in over months
  • People who habitually ask for stronger and mean it

How the hour goes

  1. Naming the problemWhere it hurts, how long it has hurt, and what makes it worse. The hour is planned around that answer.
  2. Warming the areaTen minutes of ordinary firm work first. Going deep into a cold muscle achieves nothing except making you tense.
  3. The deep workSlow, sustained pressure. Breathe out into it; hold your breath and you are being pressed too hard.
  4. Easing outLighter work over the same area and around it, so you leave loose rather than sore.

This is the wrong treatment if you bruise easily, take blood thinners, are pregnant, have osteoporosis, varicose veins in the area, or a recent injury that has not been seen by a doctor. Say so and we will work lighter or suggest an oil massage.

Deep tissue is not a competition. Being able to take more pressure does not make the treatment work better, and there is nothing to prove by staying quiet.

Questions we get asked

Will a deep tissue massage leave me sore?
Often, mildly, for a day — the way a good training session does. It should not leave you bruised, and it should not hurt sharply while it is happening.
Can I have deep tissue on my whole body?
You can ask, but we would talk you out of it. Spread across the whole body in an hour, deep work stops being deep. One or two areas is where it earns its price.
Is deep tissue the same as strong Thai massage?
No. Strong Thai massage is firm pressure and stretching through clothing, across the whole body. Deep tissue is slow, sustained work into one area, on the skin.
